iyengar® yogaiyengar 1

Iyengar®Yoga is a cohesive system of Yoga which integrates the body, the mind and the emotions in order to help develop mindfulness, self awareness and well being, through the practice of asana (postures), breathing and Yoga philosophy. Our highly trained and very experienced teachers are able to lead everyone, from the beginner to the more experienced practitioner, in a practice suitable for their level of interest and ability. Teachers will often encourage the use of simple yoga equipment or props to develop the students' self awareness and to help them perform the asanas beneficially. Beginners are first introduced to a small number of standing postures and when ready, move on to inverted postures, seated postures and other asanas. The classes always end with a relaxation period.

An Iyengar® class offers a supportive environment in which to learn. Progress is assisted by observant teachers who plan the pace and level of each lesson to suit the students' capacity. Where necessary students are adjusted by the teacher so that they learn the correct way to perform the posture and thereby gain the greatest benefit. There is a developmental progression followed by all Iyengar teachers. Starting at the introductory level students are gradually introduced to a widening range of postures, working towards more demanding postures which can be achieved with practice.

Iyengar® teachers are required to maintain and develop their own practice and to study together to deepen their understanding. Beyond the hard-won introductory teaching certificate, teachers can attain higher and more demanding teaching certificates and a number of our BNHC teachers have done just that - reaching the level where they train Iyengar® Yoga teachers. We find there is an excellent transfer of skills within the Iyengar Yoga teachers' movement, and this certificated and very well structured system is taught not only across Britain but world wide. The method is named after the great yogi BKS Iyengar, who carries in his teaching the wisdom of a lineage of great Yoga teachers.
