An interactive exploration into the anatomy & function of the diaphragm. Useful for practitioners and teachers (or teacher trainees) of movement therapies and anyone interested in getting a deeper insight into how the body works.

The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing, but it does so much more than just allow us to breathe... You will learn about the anatomy and embryology and movement of the diaphragm both theoretically and also through physical exploration and play, feeling our own movement but also that of other participants. Then we will look at how its structure and location allows it to finely balance the pressure in our chest and abdominal cavities which produces the in and out breath, how we use it to create spinal stability, improve venous blood return to the heart, and improve digestion.

We will briefly compare the use of the breath in various therapies, from yoga and pilates to qigong and consider some of the indications that the diaphragm is being poorly, or misused. Amy is a practicing Osteopath and has lectured in human anatomy and embryology for the past 8 years.

Useful for practitioners and teachers of movement therapies, but no prior knowledge will be assumed.

Date: Sunday 16 September
