Charlie Plunkett (teacher profile)

Charlie Plunkett, BNHC's ballet teacher, is the first of our teachers to write a profile for us! We wanted to know more about our lovely teachers here at BNHC, so we asked them to tell us a little bit about themselves, what they enjoy doing and why they love teaching.

Here's Charlie's profile. She teaches Ballet for Adults here on Mondays, 10.00 - 11.15am and Wednesdays, 3.30 - 4.45pm.

I am a wife, mum, author and ballet teacher - although not always in that order.

I started dance classes at the age of two and dreamt of becoming a ballerina or a writer. I wrote my first “book” at primary school. A lady in our village typed it up for me and that was it, I thought I was a published author!

I trained as a ballet dancer and also obtained my teaching qualifications. I had a lovely career as a professional dancer and dipped my toe in the world of film and television as an actress.

My love of ballet has never left me, if I were a stick of rock I would have BALLET running through me in pink letters. I teach several classes a week to adults and children, including my little boy. The emphasis is on dancing for the love of it over pure technique. My students range from absolute beginners. Those who did dance as children but it gave up when it started getting too serious and ex-professionals like me who have a lifelong love affair with ballet.

For children I teach theatre school classes with a fabulous mix of ballet, singing, dancing and drama. Of all the jobs I’ve had, teaching is the most rewarding and I’m happiest in a studio watching the faces of my class as they achieve their goals.

wednesday ballet classThe birth of my little boy reignited my love of writing and I have been charting the milestone moments in our life ever since. My first three books are ‘true diaries’ that also include useful tips and advice. They are - The True Diary of a Bride-to-be, The True Diary of a Mum-to-be a pregnancy companion and The True Diary of Baby’s First Year a mothering companion. I collaborated with 100 writers to create 100 Little Words on Parenthood, a beautiful compilation with anecdotes, poetry, words of wit and wisdom on all aspects of parenthood. My latest book is The Writers’ Muse: How to Write a Bestseller, Tips, Hints & Inspiration and I am currently working on a book about ballet. It is a practical and light-hearted look at the wonderful world of ballet and what to expect when you take a class. dscn4312When I’m not dancing, teaching or writing I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors with my little boy and I do attempt to be a domestic goddess in the kitchen, vegan chocolate chip and banana cakes are my forte!
