The transformative power of slow breathing - theory and practice

Free Talk - Breathing

with Peter Deadman

This talk has now taken place - view it on our YouTube Channel

What the Chinese tradition calls ‘internal exercise’ embraces practices such as yoga, tai chi, qigong, Pilates and more. One common characteristic is their emphasis on slow and deep breathing, which is believed to promote mental and physical wellbeing. It is exciting that science is now beginning to understand what is going on when we breathe like this, and the findings of recent research in this field are really astonishing.

This free talk will introduce the traditional perspective on breathing practice, then move on to understand what is happening in terms of the autonomic nervous system, heart rate variability, blood pressure regulation and more. The science will be simply and clearly explained, and we will look at the excitement some of these discoveries have generated in medical and psychotherapy circles. This talk will combine theory and practice, so come ready to practise simple breathing exercises, ones which every one of us can do to rapidly improve our physical and mental state.

Bees, pesticides and the future of farming

bumblebee white-tailed 600

with Dave Goulson

This talk has now taken place - view it on our YouTube Channel

Wild bees and other pollinators are in decline, threatening pollination of crops and wildflowers. Dave Goulson will talk about the reasons for these declines, and focus particularly on pesticides. Modern farming has become dependent on heavy pesticide use, and this is highly likely to be contributing significantly to declines of bees. Dave will propose ways forward for food production: how do we feed ourselves without wiping out bees and other wildlife?; does Brexit offer an opportunity?

About Professor Dave Goulson

Dave Goulson has published more than 260 scientific articles on the ecology and conservation of bumblebees and other insects. He is the author of Bumblebees; Their Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation, published in 2010 by Oxford University Press, and of the Sunday Times bestseller A Sting in the Tale, a popular science book about bumble bees, published in 2013 by Jonathan Cape, and now translated into ten languages. This was followed by A Buzz in the Meadow in 2014. Goulson founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in 2006, a charity which has grown to 9,000 members. He was the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Social Innovator of the Year in 2010, was given the Zoological Society of London’s Marsh Award for Conservation Biology in 2013, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2013, and given the British Ecological Society Public Engagement Award in 2014.
