Green Tea, Alzheimer's & Cancer

New research conducted at Newcastle University suggests that regular consumption of green tea may protect the brain against developing Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, as well as cancer.

The particular aim of this study was to establish if the protective properties of green tea survived after digestion. In fact, it found that rather than diminishing levels of neuroprotective polyphenols in green tea, enzymatic digestion in the human gut actually enhanced them. The digested polyphenols protected cells against the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide and beta-amyloid, which are known to play a significant role in the development of Alzheimer's disease, as well as significantly slowing the growth of cancer cells. In vitro protective effects of colon-available extract of Camellia sinensis (tea) against hydrogen peroxide and beta-amyloid (Aβ(1–42)) induced cytotoxicity in differentiated PC12 cells.
