Tai chi and arterial flexibility

The essence of the Chinese internal martial arts is to harmonise strength and softness. Now, a new study has found much healthier arterial compliance (= arterial flexibility in contraction and expansion) in experienced tai chi practitioners at the same time as increased muscle strength. What is exciting about this is that other types of exercise designed to improve muscle strength and delay age-related muscle weakness tend to cause a decline in arterial compliance (arterial stiffness) which is closely associated with cardiovascular disease.
