Tai chi improves neuropsychological functioning in cancer survivors

Tai chi may promote gains in neuropsychological functioning in breast cancer survivors, according to a pilot study by American researchers. Twenty-three women with a history of cancer participated in a 60-minute tai chi class twice a week for ten weeks. Before and after the intervention, participants completed neuropsychological tests (memory, executive functioning, language, and attention), five tests of balance and questionnaires on neuropsychological complaints, stress, mood, and fatigue. After the 10-week intervention, participants evidenced fewer neuropsychological complaints and enhanced neuropsychological functioning. They also demonstrated improved balance and reported better psychological functioning.
