The vital importance of skilled yoga teachers

Research published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies emphasises why it is so important to learn yoga from fully trained and experienced teachers (of the kind Brighton Natural Health Centre specialises in). The study looked at 354 people and interviewed them at the start and at the end of a year.

During the course of the year, one in ten suffered from increased pain or injury due to yoga. "In terms of severity, more than one third of cases of pain caused by yoga were serious enough to prevent yoga participation and lasted more than 3 months," lead author Prof. Evangelos Pappas said.

Pain in the upper limbs (shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand) was the most common. According to Pappas this was most likely due to poses such as downward dog which put weight on the arms.

For subjects with pre-existing musculoskeletal injuries, around 21 percent of these injuries were exacerbated by yoga participation. Pre-existing upper limb pain was most affected by yoga.
