Yoga makes you younger

A study of the effect of a yoga and meditation based lifestyle has found that a wide range of markers of cellular aging improved over the 12 weeks of the study, meaning that the participants ended up biologically younger than when they began . The 96 healthy men and women (aged 30 to 65 and leading an 'unhealthy modern lifestyle') were taught asanas, pranayama and meditation and practised for 90 minutes, five times a week for 12 weeks. The participants were tested before and at the end of the study for a range of markers of cellular aging including DNA damage, oxidative stress, antioxidant capacity, telomere length, telomerase activity, cortisol and more. All markers had improved at the end of the study, most of them significantly. Body mass index also reduced. Interestingly, reductions in the stress hormone cortisol and the inflammation-promoting interleukin 6 were greater in male subjects. The authors conclude that, "Making Yoga and Meditation an integral part of our lifestyle may hold the key to delaying aging or aging gracefully, prevent onset of multifactorial complex lifestyle diseases, promote mental, physical, and reproductive health, and prolong youthful healthy life."
